Dalian is the most internationally oriented city in Northeast China and a medical outlier in a region better known for heavy industry than healthcare innovation. While Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou dominate China's medical hierarchy, Dalian has carved out genuine clinical excellence in neurology and cardiovascular medicine — specialties that align with the demographic profile of Northeast China's aging population. Dalian Medical University's First and Second Affiliated Hospitals form the city's clinical backbone, with the First Affiliated Hospital's neurology department recognized as a National Key Clinical Specialty and a major referral center for stroke, epilepsy, and neurodegenerative diseases across the three northeastern provinces. The hospital's stroke center consistently achieves door-to-needle times competitive with top international benchmarks. Dalian's medical character is profoundly influenced by its geographic and economic ties to Japan and Korea — the city hosts thousands of Japanese enterprises and a large Japanese expatriate population, creating sustained demand for Japanese-language medical services that exceed what is available in most other Chinese cities. Several public hospitals employ Japanese-speaking coordinators, and private clinics catering specifically to Japanese patients have emerged in the Kaifaqu (Development Zone) area. For international patients, Dalian presents a mixed picture: the clinical quality at the top public hospitals is strong and costs are among the lowest of any major Chinese city, but dedicated international medical infrastructure remains underdeveloped compared to Shanghai or Beijing.
